Calls to collect a payday loan
Loretta Salzano

Q.

I have a company calling me regarding a payday loan. The company calling me says they are: THE LEGAL DEPT OF THE BUREAU OF CRIMINAL IDENTIFICATION. I want to know if this is a real company contacting me or are they simply trying to take my money. When I asked them for the cash advance company's phone number, they wouldn't give it to me. What do I do?

A.

Ask them not to call you any more. You don't mention if you obtained a payday loan and owe the money. If so, ask them to communicate with you only in writing. Of course another great way to stop the calls is to pay all amounts you owe. The confusing thing at this point might be determining who you owe. That's another reason to ask them to communicate with you only in writing. You might also want to tape any future calls. Those tapes can be very persuasive if your rights are violated.
